El Ateneo de Málaga presenta, el el jueves 5 de junio, a las 19:30 horas, en La Antesala del Ateneo de Málaga, la exposición THE SAUNA ODYSSEY, del artista finlandés KENNETH BAMBERG.
En este proyecto fotográfico el autor experimenta con las instantáneas, abandonándolas en la sauna para que se alteren y deformen con el calor, creando así imágenes evocadoras y casi mágicas, que posteriormente registra en un estudio oscuro.
Según palabras del autor:
En la soledad en la sauna me acompañan habitualmente periódicos y libros, aunque la humedad agita las páginas, haciéndose eco del agua exterior.
Una vez me dejé unas imágenes instantáneas y el calor las transformó en un caleidoscopio de nuevos colores y formas, y lo que al principio constituyó un olvido, se convirtió en algo mágico.
En esta serie fotográfica, la sauna y el azar ocupan un lugar central en el proceso creativo. La película instantánea se transforma bajo el intenso calor, generando alteraciones visuales impredecibles. Más tarde, registro estas mutaciones térmicas en imágenes capturadas dentro de un estudio oscuro.
Las fotografías evocan historias íntimas de mi isla natal, Åland.
Algunas se sitúan en escenarios donde mis amigos de la infancia y yo vivimos los dramas de la adolescencia: junto a hogueras, en bares y patios escolares —espacios cargados de valentía, conflicto y emoción. Las imágenes bitonales, teñidas de cálidos tonos amarillos y naranjas, retratan tanto la lucha de mi padre Ralf contra la enfermedad como momentos cotidianos plenos de quietud.
Las obras enmarcadas en dorado fueron tomadas en la sauna de mi infancia, un lugar donde se compartían secretos dorados y se mantenían conversaciones confidenciales. Tradicionalmente, la sauna ha sido un espacio de resolución de conflictos, de curación, de paz y de bienvenida a nuevas vidas.
Sobre el autor:
Kenneth Bamberg (nacido en 1981 en las Islas Åland) obtuvo una Maestría en Artes en la Universidad Aalto de Helsinki en 2011. Ha expuesto extensamente en exposiciones individuales y colectivas en Finlandia y en el extranjero. Bamberg ha realizado exposiciones individuales en el Instituto Cultural Finlandés de Madrid y en la Galería VU de Quebec. Ha participado en exposiciones colectivas en el Museo de Historia Nacional de Copenhague y en el Museo de Fotografía Winterthur de Zúrich. Ha recibido numerosos premios y becas de prestigio, incluyendo dos becas de trabajo de tres años de duración de la Fundación Cultural Finlandesa y la Fundación Kone.

The Ateneo de Málaga presents, on Thursday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the Ateneo de Málaga’s Antechamber, the exhibition THE SAUNA ODYSSEY by Finnish artist KENNETH BAMBERG.
In this photography project, the author experiments with snapshots, leaving them in the sauna to alter and deform with the heat, creating evocative and almost magical images, which he later records in a darkened studio.
In the author’s words: «In the solitude of the sauna, I am usually accompanied by newspapers and books, although the humidity agitates the pages, echoing the water outside.
Once, I left some snapshots there, and the heat transformed them into a kaleidoscope of new colors and shapes, and what at first seemed forgotten became something magical.
In this photographic series, the sauna and chance take center stage in the creative process. Instant film transforms under the intense heat, generating unpredictable visual alterations. I later record these thermal mutations in images captured inside a dark studio.
The photographs evoke intimate stories from my home island, Åland.
Some are set in settings where my childhood friends and I experienced the dramas of adolescence: around bonfires, in bars, and schoolyards—spaces charged with courage, conflict, and emotion. The two-tonal images, tinged with warm yellow and orange hues, portray both my father Ralf’s struggle with illness and everyday moments filled with stillness.
The gold-framed works were taken in my childhood sauna, a place where golden secrets were shared and confidential conversations held. Traditionally, the sauna has been a space for conflict resolution, healing, peace, and welcoming new lives.
About the author:
Kenneth Bamberg (born in 1981 in the Åland Islands) earned a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University in Helsinki in 2011. He has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Bamberg has held solo exhibitions at the Finnish Cultural Institute in Madrid and the VU Gallery in Quebec City. He has participated in group exhibitions at the National History Museum in Copenhagen and the Winterthur Museum of Photography in Zurich. He has received numerous prestigious awards and scholarships, including two three-year work grants from the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Kone Foundation.
